Turning a Passion into a Business Part I
Conceptually everything sounded amazing from day one. Me, Jeff and Richie were going to open a healthy, fresh, inexpensive delicious food truck in West Philly. We were going to search out and buy a truck, hire a chef and two people to work on the truck, make our menu and be up and running in no time. I have to say that we have accomplished a lot in a very small period of time, but it certainly wasn’t simple and there is no way I could have planned for half the obstacles we encountered along the way. The point of this blog entry is to give a little insight into what starting a business is all about regardless of how “simple” you may perceive it to be.
Our taco tastings after Wednesday Sips were simply incredible. Beautiful girls, great food, and plenty of being haaaamered! It sounds silly but these tastings gave us the confidence that we needed to make this happen. Everyone loved the food, the concept and the aggressive yet light hearted “grab the bull by the horns” attitude we brought to the table. So off to Licenses and Inspection (L&I) we went to sign ourselves up as a mobile vendor. Not so fast said the city, “you will need to fill out this paperwork, go to this office, get this signed, pay this fee, talk to Ms. somebody and come back when you’re done to get approved.” So off we went on what turned out to be one of the wildest goose chases of our lives. Lesson #1 in starting a business: Other people and entities don’t move nearly as fast as you would like them to.
